The UCL Philosophy Society belongs within UCL’s Philosophy Department and is run and organised by students, allowing for an independent yet synergetic effort towards towards enriching the academic experience of both philosophy students and students interested in philosophy. Through the organisation of talks and panels by philosophers of diverse backgrounds and interests, we aim to introduce discourses absent from the curriculum, and to also expand on existing knowledge. Socials and discussion groups are organised in order to foster collaboration between students, and our participation in the MAP (Minorities and Representations) and Widening Participation fora helps foster collaboration between students and the Department, and on a broader level create a meta-philosophical conversation about the state of academic philosophy today.
The UCL Philosophy Society offers a broad range of events available to all students, including UCL non-philosophy students and philosophy students of other universities. We invite speakers to introduce us to their work or interests, organise movie nights with a philosophical theme, and put on social events to help students get to know one another. As a departmental society, we also provide events for UCL Philosophy students to advance their academic learning – for example, discussion groups for specific modules or classes, essay proof-reading opportunities. We are always willing to take suggestion for what people would like to see the Society organise. Events have an attendance fee (to help us cover the snacks and drinks we put on), but it is possible to purchase membership to the Society instead.
Membership of the Philosophy Society entitles you to attend all events free of charge. Since events are put on every week, it is an opportunity to enjoy the full range of activities of the Society at a reduced rate. The fee structures are as follows:
Lecture (with wine and snacks) – £2
Movie night/discussion (with soft drinks and snacks – BYOB) – Free
Socials – Free
Term Membership – £3
Year Membership – £5 (originally £20 with a generous subsidy of £15 for each membership by a UCL Philosophy Alumnus)
3 Year Membership – £10 (originally £40 with a generous subsidy of £30 for each membership by a UCL Philosophy Alumnus)
All Philosophy students from all universities and all UCL non-Philosophy students are able to purchase membership.
The Committee for the Philosophy Society is composed of students of the UCL Philosophy Department.
